You can do it... We can help. How was your evening ?

A couple of days ago, it came to my realization that the 'special order' we put in from Home Depot had come in some time the week prior. Now, it says right on the order that once we are contacted, that they will only hold the order for seven days. That worried me. I didn't expect that they would destroy the order, or put it in a wood chipper... But, hey - It states that they will only keep it for seven days; I guess I was afraid they would send it back and I'd have to pay some sort of a "bozo that didn't pick up the order" fee.

My wife and I agreed that I should pick up the order after dinner.... Ah, no dishes to wash.

We live about five minutes away from a Home Depot, so it was no big deal to shoot on over... (about 7:00 p.m.)

I brought all the paper work necessary, and after waiting a short while, handed it to the appropriate person. While they searched the store for my order, I stood quietly (while thinking... how many days HAS it been since they called). I noticed the worker walking around, and wondered if he was still helping me. Eventually, he came by to let me know he couldn't find the order; this is after he search the outside perimeter of the store for the order.

I didn't want to come across as flustered, as they may later get angry once they found out that the order had already been sent to the wood chipper (three months earlier).

The worker brought me to the service desk, and they looked my order up on the computer... The other worker looked at me and said... "It's at the Clarence Store"...

Holy Crap, I'm at the wrong store... I apologized profusely.

(This is just the beginning of the actual story)

I made it home, and Mrs Wakanuki had left for a store. I called her and told her that I went to the wrong store... I told her that I would go to the other store, but would obviously be home later than originally expected.

The other store is about 20 minutes away... In a neighboring county where I work.

I went to the other store, and dropped off the order paperwork. It was now a little after 8:00 p.m.

Luckily, I was in a mellow mood... (unusual for me).

I think about 20 some minutes went by... NOTHING. I asked the girl.

"Are you sure someone is helping me?".
"Oh, yes", she reassured me.

Another 20 minutes go by... NOW she calls the guy. Only to find out that he thought that the customer wasn't actually in the store (so he did nothing so far).

I'm DYING. But, decided it was an honest mistake. Now he's going to look (8:50 p.m.)

9:15 p.m. - No news. I'm looking for Alan Funt (I guess it would be Peter now). Certainly, I'm on some new show, where they push the customer to the limits.

I'm ready to leave. I have a headache and can't take much more. Peter Funt see's this and sends the message.

Peter backstage: "tell him you can't find it".

Girl: "He can't find it".

Me: "I want to go home".

Peter backstage: "Don't let him leave"

Girl: "I just sent two more workers to go look for it"

Me: "I'll give them a few minutes - then I'm going home"

9:30 p.m. - They finally find the damn order.

9:49 p.m. - I have the car loaded and I'm going home.

No Peter Funt, No discount card from Home Depot.

That of course would be the end of the story except...

10:10 p.m.

I get home, only to see my wife's face in the front window (lit up from the car's lights). She is on the phone.

I get to the door to see her with tears in her eyes. She said something about either calling the police or, going to call the police. She had my mother on the phone, who also was a wreck (some of you know her as Edith). My mother apparently sent my father (some of you know him as Archie), to go looking for me.

People are upset...

10:30 (dad arrives at out house)..."WHAT DID YOU DO?" As if I went to the Canadian Ballet...

I give him the short story that you wish you had... and he is on his way home. I normally go to bed by 10:30, but had to wait until dad got home to make sure he made it back alright (11:00 p.m. - he made it home).

Mrs Wakanuki has mentioned this event a couple of times since that evening... She doesn't seem to believe that I was at Home Depot for the entire evening.

Hope your evening was better,

Wakanuki
